Evaluation

I think documentary project a very important project to have. It helped me in different ways. And I like to explain that one by one.

First of all, during a documentary project idea development is such important thing to do, because this idea can be affecting the audience directly. So, at that point it’s important to have a good idea and good research to continue this project.

If I explain my idea again, I needed to talk about how social media can affect to our life. Especially, teenagers and students. And for talk about that, I needed to have statics and evidences. So, I researched into websites and documentaries which are providing the details I was looking for. After collecting that data, I wrote my script. For the script I used research results (online survey) as well.

Meanwhile, I did an example interview. And it was my first professional interview. But unfortunately, something unprofessional thing happened. I didn’t use a tie mic for my interview. The reason that I didn’t use one, because I did the interview in the springboard studio and there’s a mic, we could use it all the time. I used that mic. And also, I forget to check the sounds before starts the interview. During the post-production it was hard to edit the audio file. From that interview I learnt some much things I should do before an interview. In the second interview, I had that interview with my lecture and he’s the one who suggested me to use a tie mic during an interview all the time. So, I used tie mic to second and had good output from it. It was good lesson to me.

After pre-production, I started postproduction quick as I can. Because, I spent too time to research. Time- management was fail during the beginning of the project. And it affects to production. I asked help from my lecture as well. And he helped me. Time management failure was affected to rest the project. I have to learn to time management.

I finished a sample version my version and asked my lecture’s opinion about that. And he showed I had to use lots archival footages and it’s good to have in documentary like this, but it didn’t help me to understand my skills and also mentioned it will affect to the grade as well. And I understand what he was saying, and I realised I have to do something to show my skills. Then, I planned to redo some recordings.

Most of the reshooting in college and did it by me. As placements, I used one of my classrooms and the breakroom. The reason I used two locations because I wanted to see some location different between two screens. And also, I did some shooting at home. For that video sequences close up shots subjects and I recorded it all my own. Therefore, I only used 5 archival footages and addition to that I  used 3 footages and It was important to have in that documentary.

Now I like to talk the voice over. Because that was my first time doing a voice over for something like that.  During the recording I learnt how to connect a mic to audition and how to do the noise reduction and do the sound balancing.

Doing a documentary for the first was very exciting. And applying the theory we learnt from the lessons, were very helpful during every stage of the project. As an example, “how to make a good narrative to get more attention from the audience. And overall, the project was very interesting and learnt lots of stuff. As an example, I never use LUTs before and I get this project as an opportunity to use it and used it. And I’ve never done voice over recording by my own. Using minimum resources and do a good recording. I learnt importance having extra footages before start production. How to arrange quick re-recording sessions and prioritise time I have in a more productive way.

Furthermore, to be honest, I enjoyed this project.

And these are some feedback I was having from my classmates.

Jason- I really liked it made some very important points and provided insight into the darker sides of social media. Which made it the message more powerful. Only thing I would say is at time it was a little quiet and difficult to hear which is an easy fix.

Tom – I really like the flow of the documentary; I like how you Are trying to educate your viewers and even convey some message to what is happening. Next time maybe cut the Justin interview down or even put archival or footage over the top. However, you should be really proud of yourself thisura!

Patrick-Great documentary really like the added graphics and interview framing and composition is perfect. Good use of subtitles and you have really got your message across about social media and had an impact on the audience.

Maximus March- I really like how you had lots of variety between shots. I liked how you looked at lots of themes to do with social media. There were lots of good stats that were in there was well which gave lots of immolation to the audience. Your script was really well written, and you did a good job with the V.O. I also liked how you had subtitles throughout.

Codes and Conventions What are codes and convention?             Codes are the signs which providing a meaning a scene, as an example character’s costumes, camera angles.             Conventions are the accepted way to do something. And it could repeat use. Example, a love song in romantic films. Convention of Documentary 1.       Actuality footage - this is more like recording live situations and events with real people, not actors. 2.       Voiceovers – this used for documentaries most of the time. We couldn’t see anyone but have their voice to describe the things in the documentary. 3.       Interview - the interview is we are going to record a person talk with their permission. Basically, there’s an interviewer and an interviewee, and the interviewer is asking the question and intervi...

Production

pre- production I started pre-production 23rd of January and in that day, I did the example interview. I did that interview with my class member, Thomas. I asked question and having his opinion about social media. Also, I did ask similar questions I would ask for my original interviews. Interview was 6 mins long and I had good comments for each question from him. And this was setup I used for my set interview. I used three pointing lighting. And had to have one camera. And I had big break, next video recording I did 07 th February. I did the second interview with Justin Smith course director of media level 3. During the interview, I asked his opinions about social media and how does he think about students interact with social media as lecture etc. That interview was 12 minutes long and for that I used multi- camera technique first time. re- shoot Then after shows to sample documentary, my lecture commented on that and said, there were too many stock footages I put i...
